Required Supplies:

Language Lab
  • Software: (free download) Praat program.
  • Tapes: Computer with microphone or Two (2) 90 min. Audiocassette tapes for use in the language lab and for diagnostic tests.
  • Computer with microphone (or access to a personal tape recorder with microphone)
  • Mirror: Cheap, handheld, approx. 8cm. x 8cm, or 3 x 3"." (Walmart)

Objective:

The lab portion of ASE 1 is designed to improve your pronunciation of American English in all areas. This includes the individual sounds, (consonants and vowels), sound combinations including consonant clusters, stress, rhythm, and intonation. The class meets in the language lab in Turlington 1317, and periodically at the Multi-Media Lab in Little Hall 225. Everything you learn in lab will be reinforced and practiced in the other sections of 5835 (class and video feedback). What you learn in those sections will also be reinforced and practiced in the lab.
