Who Takes ASE Courses?
Required Courses |
| EAP 5836 (ASE 2) is required by Florida Law for international graduate students whose first language is not English if they are appointed as a teaching assistant and have scored 45 or 50 on the SPEAK test. "Teaching" is defined as lab instruction, lecturing, and/or leading discussions. Grading, tutoring, and proctoring are not defined as "teaching". International students with these assignments may wish to enroll in EAP 5837. Only those international graduate students who are currently teaching may enroll in EAP 5836. |

| It is recommended that international graduate students who have not scored at least a 45 on the SPEAK enroll in EAP 5835 (ASE 1) within their first year in the United States. The Graduate School or the student's home department may require an ASE course of any student whose English competency is not considered adequate. |

| General academic language for graduate students and potential teaching assistants. 4 credits, 9 class hours per week. | Required during the first semester of teaching for international teaching assistants (ITAs) with SPEAK scores of 45 - 50. This is a 3 credit course. | For advanced learners. Appropriate for graders and tutors. 3 credits, 3 hours each week + videotaped tutoring. Student-teacher conferences biweekly. |

Summer Only! EAP 5937: Special Topics In Academic Spoken English |

| This is a 2-credit Summer course open to international graduate students wishing to improve their oral skills. It is not equivalent to ASE courses offered during Spring and Fall terms but will offer practice in a variety of presentation, discussion, and interpersonal skills required for successful participation in graduate studies. It will feature regular classroom interaction with native speakers as well as a pronunciation component. | ||
