Who Takes ASE Courses?

Required Courses

EAP 5836 (ASE 2) is required by Florida Law for international graduate students whose first language is not English if they are appointed as a teaching assistant and have scored 45 or 50 on the SPEAK test. "Teaching" is defined as lab instruction, lecturing, and/or leading discussions. Grading, tutoring, and proctoring are not defined as "teaching". International students with these assignments may wish to enroll in EAP 5837. Only those international graduate students who are currently teaching may enroll in EAP 5836.

Optional Courses

International graduate students may voluntarily enroll in EAP 5835 (ASE 1) or EAP 5837 (ASE 3) to:
  • Improve their oral English skills
  • Prepare for an assistantship
  • Participate more effectively in their graduate work
It is recommended that international graduate students who have not scored at least a 45 on the SPEAK enroll in EAP 5835 (ASE 1) within their first year in the United States. The Graduate School or the student's home department may require an ASE course of any student whose English competency is not considered adequate.
